Connecticut-based band The Inside Out are back with a new single. An upbeat track, “Good Times” stays true to the band’s penchant for appreciating the little things in life. The song captures the freedom and joy that come with summer – whether you’re driving with the windows pulled down, dancing with friends, or cooling off at the beach, it’s a reminder to cherish the good times in life.

You may remember The Inside Out from my April Music Wrap-Up, when I talked about their last release, “Too Late.” I had a chance to talk with the band shortly after the release of “Too Late,” when they played at Launch Music Festival in Lancaster, PA, keep reading for the interview!

The original interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Emma Zoe Polyak: Hi everyone, I’m in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and I’m here with The Inside Out. You guys just played on the outside stage – how was it? What are your initial feelings?

James Howard: It was really fun! It’s always a blast playing outside with the fresh air hitting you in the face. Also, the crowd tonight was awesome. Everyone came up afterwards to say hi, and that’s always a good feeling.

John Landino: I had a lot of fun, a bit of technical issues, but we worked through them and the show was sick!

Zach Stout: Fresh air is always great, it’s always fun to see people waking by in different directions and saying hi, just bopping their heads and nodding along.

Andi Wright: Yeah, it was cool, I never played a show with like a roundabout right behind me, so it was a very different experience. There wasn’t just like a curtain or a wall right behind me, so I really felt like I was in the world playing music.

EZP: That’s a good point, people were driving by and just seeing your backs and hearing your music, probably thinking “What is going on?”

AW: Yeah, people got to go right to the side of the stage and everything.

EZP: I also wanted to talk a bit about your single “Too Late.” Tell me about the process of writing that song.

JH: Yeah, the song is really fun. It’s about just getting out of whatever and just going. It doesn’t matter what situation you’re in, you’re just going, trying to survive the different elements thinking that it’s gonna be better than worse. But also, kind of realizing that where you were wasn’t that bad to begin with. Realizing that reality is like, the grass is greener.

EZP: Yeah, what I really love that about this song is that it kind of makes you reflect and just reminds you to live in the moment.

JH: We played that song a lot on tour back in the fall of 2023, and it sounds completely different than it did when we were playing on tour all last year. We kind of reworked it back in January, we changed the guitars up, and it was fun, I think it ended up in a great spot.

EZP: Switching gears, I’m going to ask a couple of questions about “the soundtrack to your life.” To get us into it, what is the most recent song each of you listened to?

AW: In between bands at the stage we were just playing at, they were playing a remix of “Heads Will Roll” by the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, and I love the original song so it was cool to hear a remix a hadn’t heard before.

JH: I’ve been jamming to “Flowers” by Real Estate. They released that not too long ago and it’s catchy, it’s chill, it’s great for the car ride.

ZS: Mine was Pixies’ “Here Comes Your Man.”

JL: I’ve been listening to a band called Bilmuri.

EZP: What are your controversial song picks? For example, a song that you love but everyone dislikes, or one that you dislike but everyone loves.

AW: This is a hard one to answer, but I guess I’ll just say, “Ode To Sleep” by Twenty One Pilots. It’s a guilty pleasure. I just feel like when it’s late at night and I’m driving home, I put it on if I need to wake up. Really drum heavy and fun.

JH: I don’t think there’s a song that I hate that like a lot of people love or vice versa. But a lot of old Modest Mouse is a lot of yelling. I love that, but not everyone does.

JL: I really love this artist called Japanese House. She’s an amazing, super sad girl singer-songwriter, and you wouldn’t think that I listen to that just by looking at me.

ZS: There’s this playlist on Spotify I started to listen to as a joke, but the more I listen to it, the more I bop my head along. One song I’m thinking of is PayDay by Yuno Miles, definitely check it out – scratches your eardrums for sure.

EZP: If aliens came to Earth, what is the song you would play them? I’m talking the best song you’ve ever heard, greatest of all time.

ZS: Definitely Pink Floyd.

JL: Aliens need to check out a song from Bilmuri called “ABSOLUTELYCRANKINMYMF’INHOG” – it rips.

JH: “Bohemian Rhapsody”

AW: When I think aliens I kind of think Daft Punk.

EZP: That’s a good one! Thank you so much, guys!

“Too Late” and “Good Times” are the second and third singles off the band’s upcoming album Road Trip, which is set to release later this year. Watch the music video for “Good Times” below. Happy listening!
