While most artists release new music with several singles, a music video or two, and lots of vague Instagram posts, The Hospital has another approach. Today, on September 13 (a Friday on top of that!), they released their debut EP, Trying to Fall Asleep. An unconventional approach seems all the more daring considering that this is The Hospital’s first ever release.
Four tracks leave the EP just under twenty minutes, covering all the things that keep us up when we’re trying to fall asleep. From people on our minds, to staying out late, to anxiety that keeps our minds running, The Hospital paints a relatable picture throughout their EP. “I have a real longing for life... a part of me knows I need to sleep, but the overdriving part of me wants to live. We wanted ‘Trying To Fall Asleep’ to feel like a romanticized memory, of which you’re not sure if the nuances you remember are exactly how it happened, but it's what you take from it, and I think we created the perfect feeling of how dynamic life can be,” shared The Hospital about the origins of the EP.
The tracks themselves are overall upbeat, with honest and reflective lyrics shining through. “Won’t Waste My Time on You” is a driving opener, with crashing drums and riffy guitars inviting you to dance around as you sing along. “Hot Pink Cappuccino” starts out a bit more subdued, before hitting a bouncy beat. “I Don’t Wanna Sleep Alone” is another quieter moment; a drumbeat takes the foreground as The Hospital’s lyrics echo throughout the song. “Take My Breath Away” is a hopeful tune, sweet and uplifting.
Even though the EP dropped all at once, The Hospital has some tricks up their sleeves. Stay tuned for official music videos, coming as soon as next week. Check out the visualizers for now, and stream Trying to Fall Asleep below!
